Below features a series of select personal projects beginning in 2017, which was the year I crowdfunded my first public exhibition (At Land and Sea, 2017), an audiovisual gallery show and collaborative project between myself and sound artist Joe Davin. The focus at this time was mainly on the cultural history of the English landscape which I tended to explore through text, sound, photographs and research into the folk history of specific rural sites surrounding my then home in Sussex (The Devil and the Downs, 2017-2020). Despite it differing slightly to the larger body of work I made for my practice-based PhD, which originated in (and then pivoted from) the broad subject of landscape before I became interested in the cultural history of plants (These Rooted Bodies, 2018-2025), it nevertheless provides a kind of “backbone” to my creative practice and provides a visual roadmap of the ways in which I think about and make photographs with or in the places I encounter as a practitioner.
